How to Select the Right Mobile Phones for Senior Citizens in India

By Rajnish Mehan of Mehan Online Media

When it comes to mobile phones, the choice of senior citizens hugely differs from the young people. But everybody wants to stay connected with their loved ones irrespective of their nationality and outlook. Unlike the western countries, in India young people share a more intimate relationship with their grandparents and other elder family members. If you are not able to frequently visit your grandparents due to your profession, it is better to present cell phones as gift and make them feel special by calling regularly. However, you must not buy the mobile phone based on your personal choice; rather consider specific features that allow the senior person to use the mobile phone in a simple, easy and convenient way.

You should remember the simple fact that the senior people feel skeptical about using a modern gadget, if they are not able to use these in a smooth and convenient way. Therefore, you need to ensure that the model has large keypad, while selecting mobile phones for your grandfather. Most of the elder people has vision problem and they find it difficult to read the small letters. The small keypads may look more impressive and stylish, but the real user will not be able to see the keys in an exact manner. You should prefer the mobile phones with large and raised buttons so that the senior person can easily dial his desired number.

Many elder people are hard of hearing and normally use hearing aids to hear things properly. Therefore, you have to select a mobile phone with stronger speaker phone capabilities. You also have options to choose from some specific models, which are specially designed to suit the requirement of people using hearing aids. Similar to the keypad, it is also advisable to choose the cell phone models with larger screen sizes. The large screen allows the senior people to view the menu and other information. Further, the cell phone screen needs to sport a high contrast and bright display.

A large percentage of senior people in India normally don’t access internet. Their simple and normal lifestyle is still not impacted by Google, Facebook and Twitter. Therefore, you should keep in mind the daily lifestyle of your grandparents and avoid buying the latest models offering better and faster internet access options. You should concentrate on a number of simple and inexpensive models that allows them to make and receive phone calls in a convenient manner. However, you can consider a high-end model, if your grandparents have a modern outlook and they are in the habit of using internet.

In addition to the normal features and functionalities, you also have to consider the design of the cell phone. You can choose the cell phones with a normal design along with the flip-open and touch screen designs. As you have to train your grandparents about using the cell phone, the mobile phones with flip open design will be a good choice. Most of these models allow users to answer a call simply by flipping the cover open. Similarly, a phone call can be ended by slipping the cover close. Also, the cell phones with flip-open designs are less prone to accidental dialing of numbers.
